Alchemy in Tibet, Nepal and Bhutan is mostly based in the esoteric form of Buddhism known as Vajrayana, or the ‘Indestructible Vehicle’. This form of Buddhism offers some of the most efficient and powerful means for attaining enlightenment in a single life, and includes the use of special alchemical elixirs for speeding one along the path. Many of the lineages of Tibetan alchemy come from the two most famous Buddhist alchemists of ancient India, the Mahasiddhas Nagarjuna and his student, Aryadeva. Ringsel Elixir Pellets:
In the Buddhist tradition, the death of a great master is often marked by the appearance of auspicious signs. These include unusual meteorological events such as circular rainbows, extraordinarily clear blue skies and snowfalls which look like a rain of flowers. Often the body of the master does not exhibit the ordinary appearances associated with death – pallor, rigor mortis and decay – but remains in a special type of meditative absorption known as thugdam, which can last as long as 21 days. During this time it is said that connecting with the awakened mind of the master is easily accomplished, and many disciples report feeling closer to their teacher during this time than they did during the master’s life.
When the true signs of physical death set in, the body is sometimes wrapped in cloth and placed in a large box where course salt is packed around it. This pulls the liquids from the body and allows the disciples time to perform the complex ritual practices necessary at this time. After approximately seven weeks, the body is cremated in a large stupa-shaped furnace known as a purkong, which is specially made for this purpose, and rituals are performed at the four points of the compass by the master’s disciples and Dharma siblings.
It is said that when the sacred commitment (samaya) between master and disciples is especially intact, and all the ritual observances surrounding the death are carried out successfully, there is a chance that special gem-like relic pills, (known as śarīra in Sanskrit, ringsel in Tibetan and shelize in Chinese) may be found in the ashes. These magical items carry tremendous blessings, and are said to appear as a support for the faith of the disciples.
Having been heavily involved in the practice and study of Vajrayana Buddhism for many years, I have been given a number of these special relics by my teachers and other devoted practitioners. Others I, myself, found in the ashes of my own cremated teachers. To me they form the core of my personal collection of holy items, and inspire me on a daily basis to practice as hard as I can. Due to good fortune and the extreme and wondrous generosity of others, I have collected these relics from Burma, Thailand, Nepal, India and Tibet.
We have long been intrigued by the alchemical gem-extraction methods developed in the Ayurvedic and Siddha traditions of India as well as similar Taoist methods for condensing and capturing the subtle energies of minerals and stones. Perhaps due to the blessings of our teachers, we struck upon what I believe to be a unique method for extracting the subtle but potent enlightened energies of these relics.
In order that others may take part in the blessings associated with these rare and special materials, we at Future Alchemy have developed a process through which the ‘energetic essence’ of the ringsel is extracted and concentrated. This essence is then distributed onto homeopathic pellets, making them easy to transport and use. They can be dissolved in water or alcohol, placed on one’s shrine, in a statue or stupa, or administered directly under the tongue to bring the mind into alignment with the realization these relics represent.
Each vial contains approximately 150 pellets, of which 1 – 4 can be taken at once.
If you are an energetically sensitive spiritual practitioner, the effect is to bring about a sense of clarity and an openness of mind which can be very profound. However, effects will differ with one’s sensitivity and karmic connection. Funds generated from the sale of this product will go directly to Tibet, India and Nepal to assist with Future Alchemy and Siddhi Energetic’s projects there.
If you are interested in this type of material, you might wish to look at Amrita Meditation Water as well.
Testimonials:
Dear Joseph,
Yesterday I got the Jigme Lingpa statue along with the Ringsel pills and I proceeded to take a couple. Right now, I am on an Ayurvedic cleanse for 10 days in which I take a grass I brought from India and only one meal a day; mainly Kichari. About one hour after I took the pills I was driving home from the office, when I started to taste this sweetness in my mouth. It seemed to be coming from within. This sweet taste continued even after I had dinner and after I brushed my teeth and it is still going till now – the next day. It’s a taste I can’t explain; it seems to be coming from my throat area. I thought I would share this with you. All your products are amazing beyond words, and this one especially. You can really feel the liveliness, the energy, and the blessings behind them. Thank you so much!
By the way, I didn’t take any more of the elixir pellets today, yet the sweetness continues…
José

Chulen Pills:
We are very pleased to offer a special form of Chulen made at Gangtey Gompa in Bhutan and consecrated by HE Gangteng Rinpoche himself. In the autumn of 2014 HE Gangteng Rinpoche, incarnation of Pema Lingpa and supreme head of the Nyingma school of Buddhism in the country of Bhutan, visited our center Chonyi Ling here in Colorado. He bestowed the empowerment for the Kongchak Chidu, an important cycle of teachings revealed by the 16th century visionary Jatson Nyingpo. After the empowerment Rinpoche gave me a freshly made batch of Chulen, asking that I offer them for sale on this site to support the nuns, monks and retreatants who Rinpoche is responsible for. The pills are made in the traditional way by a classically trained Tibetan doctor and lama living at Gangtey Gompa, and are used by practitioners in Bhutan who are engaged in the practice of Essence Extraction (Tib. bCud len). The recipe is preserved in the Nyingma Tantras, and the herbs making up the pill are wild crafted by the doctor and his assistants in the mountains surrounding the monastery.
The practice of Chulen helps to break one’s habitual attachment to external food by allowing the body to extract nutrition and energy from various refined sources, such as empowered water, air (chi or prana), the sky, or, more commonly, condensed essence pills such as these. Some practitioners are able to fast on nothing but these pills for periods or more than six months, taking no food at all. Even if one is not fasting, Chulen can help to restore deep energy and establish a mind state suitable for meditation.
For practitioners in the West, Rinpoche said these pills can deepen meditation, improve health, and will help the practitioner to make a connection to the lineage of Pema Lingpa and Buddhism as a whole. To get the maximum results, Rinpoche recommended taking one pill per day in the morning with warm water for at least three weeks. My own experience, however, is that they are quite energetically active, and taking even one pill has been beneficial to my practice. Rinpoche also mentioned the pills are very blessed, containing not only herbs and minerals but relics and other blessed substances he himself contributed to the formula, and as such may be worn in a reliquary (gao) or placed on one’s shrine.

Longchenpa’s Tummo Enhancement Formula:
These are very special rilbu (actually capsules) specifically designed to enhance the practice of inner heat, or Tummo (gtum-mo/chandali). The recipe comes from the great 14th century Dzogchen master Longchen Rabjam’s collection Khandro Nyingthig, which is found in the Nyingtig Yabshi, or Four Cycles of the Heart Essence. The Khandro Nyingthig is a collection of instructions originally brought to Tibet in the eighth century by Padmasambhava, and contains some of the most esoteric and profound teachings in the whole of the Tibetan Buddhist Vajrayana canon.
According to the Khandro Nyingthig cycle of instructions, the body is essentially a system of energies in motion. These energies (rLung) flow throughout the body in a system of subtle energetic channels (Tib: tsa, Sanskrit: nadi), not unlike the meridian system of Chinese medicine. The most condensed form of subtle energy is tigle (Sanskrit: bindu).
This particular formula is designed to support and enhance the most essential yogic practice in all of the Vajrayana school: inner heat, or Tummo. Tummo is a powerful method of combining visualization, breath control (pranayama) and inner yogic control to cause the confused energies of the body (rLung) to gather and enter the central channel of the body. This causes duality and conceptual thinking to collapse, and reveals the true nature of the mind in its most pristine aspect. As an outward sign of such control, accomplished yogis are immune to the cold and can live on very little food, at altitudes of over 16,000 feet in the Himalayas wearing only a single piece of cloth, for years at a time. The practice of Tummo is found in all Vajrayana Buddhist schools, and detailed instructions are found in the Six Dharmas of Naropa, the Kalachakra, the Sakya Lamdre, and the Anuyoga teachings of the Nyingma school. For more about Tummo, go here.
Tummo was originally developed in India as the main yogic practice of the Mahasiddha tradition. It was absorbed into the hatha yoga school as the teachings on kundalini and chandali, while in Buddhism it became Tummo. Some of these same teachings were later absorbed into the Taoist Qigong teachings of China, where they are still practiced as the Lesser and Greater Kan and Li yogas.
To use this formula, swallow one capsule with warm water on an empty stomach. According to Longchenpa, after taking the pill “heat and bliss will arise like fire”. The dosage is one capsule. It is advised to avoid this formula if you are not engaged in the practice of Tantric yoga.
Note: In order to make chewing unnecessary, we are now offering this formula in vegetarian capsules rather than pellets which must be chewed. This enables a stronger combination of herbs and a better effect. One capsule is $9.
Taranatha, the great Tibetan 16th century scholar, historian and Kalachakra yogin, met the Indian mahasiddha Buddhaguptanatha while the latter was visiting Tibet. Buddhaguptanatha was a master of Tummo, and Taranatha’s description of him makes clear what this yogic practice is capable of bringing about at the highest level:
The signs and marks of his accomplishment as a yogin were plainly visible to ordinary eyes. Half the day he remained [in a state] whereby he cut off the flow of his breath, and at practically all times he stayed naked. Not only did he not experience any harm from this, but his immediate entourage, within a two meter radius, could feel an intense heat, by means of which he was able to protect others from the cold. By cutting off the flow of his breath through mouth and nostrils, he was able to make appear to his eyes and ears whatever he wanted. Also, his feet did not sink in water. He remained suspended about two fingers above the ground, and his bodily splendor would touch every object and remain there for a long time.
He possessed the power of seeing others’ secret designs, and in a supernatural way knowing others’ minds. His body was light: he would jump down from (a height of) two or three stories, and, like a skin that had been flung down, he landed gently like a feather. He would climb up a steep mountain as if it were flat land. Poison, quicksilver and the like were unable to harm his body. As his mind was constantly abiding in steady loving kindness, dogs and even ferocious carnivores would lick his body and in other ways show their affection. Ravens, little birds and so forth would alight on his lap or on the tips of his fingers. They didn’t flee when he petted them, but remained where they were, obviously happy. At the time of bestowing an empowerment, he was able to make the wisdom actually descend.
In the presence of worthy candidates he would show miraculous occurrences of various kinds, such as radiating light into the maṇḍala. He stood in no need for the food of humans; he lived on foods offered to him by non-human beings. When he was engaged in one-pointed deity yoga, the appearances of the present were really cut off and he was one endowed with the wisdom of at all times viewing everything outer and inner as devoid of any basis and as self-liberated. We with the scope similar to that of mayflies, how could we possibly evaluate the limit of his outstanding qualities of body, speech and mind? (This beautiful passage was translated by Professor David Templeman, Ph.D)
In spite of the practice of Tummo being well known in the world today, according to tradition it should only be undertaken by those who have received empowerment, blessings and instructions from a qualified lineage holder.
