Of the four questions that Ananda asked the Buddha before his nirvana, the second one was, "When the Buddha is in the world, we take the Buddha as our teacher. After the Buddha enters nirvana, whom should we regard as our teacher?" The implication was that a new teacher needed to be selected from among the great Bodhisattvas and great Arhats. A patriarch must be chosen to take the Buddha's place. The Buddha, however, did not tell them to select a patriarch or a teacher. He gave a very wonderful answer. He said, "You should take the precepts as your teacher." ~ Commentary by the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua Source: www.cttbusa.org/fas1/fas1_part1.asp
